How did Pilates come about?

Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, is a mind-body exercise system designed to optimize physical fitness in people at every level of physical ability. Joseph Pilates (1880–1967) was a German expatriate who first made his mark in England during WWI by developing a series of exercises and innovative equipment to help prisoners of war regain strength and mobility. When Joseph Pilates immigrated to New York, the local professional dance community discovered that his conditioning technique, called ‘Contrology’ helped prevent injury and improve strength while maintaining long, even muscle tone.

In addition, Joseph Pilates, a circus performer, self-defense instructor, and boxer, developed pilates in World War 1 by using hospital bed springs to create workouts for his patients. He brought this exercise from Germany to the United States in the ’20s by offering it in a New York City ballet studio. Pilates is a mind-body workout that will strengthen your core, tone your entire body, and help you with stability. Pilates is a class that can be done on a mat or a reformer (a piece of equipment made with springs and ropes to add resistance to your workout).

Reformer Pilates:

Reformer Pilates is a training practice on an exercise, moving machine called a Reformer. It has springs that offers different resistence, based on the clients level, the type of movment and excercise being taught by the instructor. It is low-impact, full-body workout focusing on core strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. It involves precise movements using the Reformer and breathing techniques to enhance physical and mental wellness and awareness. In addition, your Pilates instructor will recommend or provide options to use bands, exercise balls, magic circle, and sometimes even small weights to help elevate your overall Pilates experience. These pieces of equipment can help focus, isolate and strengthen work in a specific area or muscle group of the body.

Mat Pilates:

Mat Pilates is another Pilates training practice that can be done on a mat specifically. Don’t let this practice deceive you…it is still challenging and offers amazing benefits. Mat Pilates is a workout that strengthens your core muscles, tones your muscles, and can be done anywhere. For a successful mat Pilates workout, you only need your body weight and a mat, however as with the reformer practice, your Pilates instructor will recommend and offer you options to use bands, exercise balls, magic circle, and sometimes even small weights to help elevate your overall Pilates experience. Also, these pieces of equipment can help focus, isolate and strengthen work in a specific area or muscle group of the body.
